In the presence of other significant risk factors—such as abnormal fetal growth, maternal infection, fetomaternal hemorrhage, neonatal sepsis, and chronic placental lesions—an acute intrapartum event as the sole underlying pathogenesis of neonatal encephalopathy becomes much less likely.
Risk factors for neonatal encephalopathy include older maternal age, family history, maternal thyroid disease, maternal hypertension, vaginal bleeding, infertility, and fetal growth restriction.
Perinatal infection and inflammation are independent risk factors for neonatal encephalopathy in this African population, supporting a role in the aetiological pathway of term brain injury. 2020-12-01 · Incidence, Intrapartum Risk Factors, and Prognosis of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Among Infants Born at 35 Weeks Gestation or More Author links open overlay panel Lavanya Ravichandran MD 1 Victoria M. Methods 210 term infants with NE and 2017-12-11 · Background Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) affects 2–4/1000 live births with outcomes ranging from negligible neurological deficits to severe neuromuscular dysfunction, cerebral palsy and death. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the sub cohort of NE that appears to be driven by intrapartum events. Our objective was to identify antepartum and intrapartum factors associated with the Locatelli A, Incerti M, Paterlini G, et al. Antepartum and intrapartum risk factors for neonatal encephalopathy at term. Am J Perinatol 2010; 27:649. Hayes BC, McGarvey C, Mulvany S, et al. A case-control study of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborn infants at >36 weeks gestation.

Objective Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is the third leading cause of child mortality. Preclinical studies suggest infection and inflammation can sensitise or precondition the newborn brain to injury. This study examined perinatal risks factor for NE in Uganda. Design Unmatched case–control study.
21 Apr 2020 Background: When hypoxia is the cause for neonatal encephalopathy, a clinical syndrome has been described known as hypoxic–ischemic
All cases met Intrapartum brain injury that is due to a proximal risk factor may lead to neonatal encephalopathy and subsequent cerebral palsy. B. Intrapartum brain injury may be the result of both distal and proximal risk factors that predispose the fetus to brain injury and cerebral palsy. C. Brain injury or anomaly may occur in the antepartum period as a Acute bilirubin encephalopathy.

2020 (English) In: The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, ISSN 1476-7058, E-ISSN 1476-4954, Vol. 33, no 5, p. 799-805 Article in journal (Refereed) Published Abstract [en] Objective: To identify antepartum and intrapartum risk factors for neonatal seizures in the absence of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods:
Original article Selection with the stepwise method and logistic regression analysis identified four independent risk factors for NE-CP: suboptimal intrapartum care (OR, 2.21; 95%CI: 1.99-2.47), cesarean section (OR, 1.19; 95%CI: 1.08-1.31), successful TOID (OR, 1.14; 95%CI: 1.03-1.25), and hypertension (OR, 1.20; 95%CI: 1.01-1.42). 2019-10-14 · Independent antenatal risk factors included primigravida, previous fetal death/stillbirth, antidepressant use, illicit drug use, Rh sensitization, and adjusted gestational weight gain >13.6 kg. All of the possible risk factors that might have contributed to asphyxia were identified and recorded HIE was diagnosed based on the Modified Sarnat-Sarnat Score for the diagnosis of neonatal encephalopathy.
